How to tell if your bathtub has ever been
refinished before…

Some of the signs of a previous refinishing:

  • Layering or peeling on the surface of the tub.

The finish is "coming off".

If there is a nick, chip or scrape anywhere and you see a
different color shade underneath such as a different shade of white or any color other than black.  (Black underneath is just the cast iron or steel).

Wrinkles, Bubbles, Blisters.

In order to refinish a bathtub that has been refinished before, the proper procedure is to strip off the previous refinishing. If this
is not done
the new coating can wrinkle and blister, pop and simply not lay down  nicely.

The adhesion also can be severely compromised by spraying over an old finish.  This is why they ask you if the tub
has ever been refinished
before. There is an additional fee to strip off the previous refinishing.

This is a shocking example of rapid adhesion failure on one of our competitor's mechanical bonding polyurethane finishes. Sadly enough, if you use a low grade finish like this one, you end up paying more in the long run to have it redone later as this customer unfortunately discovered.
